After leaving school, Colin completed his joinery apprenticeship and over the next 45 years he has worked in the industry in various roles a joinery manufacturer, a house builder, a ten year stint in engineering, 15 years as a Joinery Polytech Tutor in Invercargill, and at one stage, was the host of a home handy-man radio show. Colin and Ruth decided to move to Nelson to have a go at orcharding. However, he decided to go with what he knew best, and hence, Ruby Bay Joinery was born. Ruth assisted Colin with the bookwork for the company. They now live in Ruby Bay, semi-retired, enjoying family and grandchildren.

Wayne moved to Nelson with his parents in 1988 and after leaving school bravely decided to take up a joinery apprenticeship under his perfectionist father. He completed this apprenticeship in 1993 and is still with the company today. In the last four years he has taken on the responsibility of managing the company. Wayne married Dinah in 1998, who for the last five years has had the thrill of doing the company accounts from home. They live in Ruby Bay and have been blessed with three girls and one boy.
